The 15th Annual “Blue Ridge Brutal 100”
bike ride took place on Saturday, August 21, 2004. Event Coordinator Shane
Little stated that this was the largest turnout ever, with 269 riders
participating from all over the U.S., including Maryland, Pennsylvania,
Florida, Georgia, and California.
One of the riders making a comeback this year was
hometown favorite Dr. Elam Kurtz, who, after being involved since the
conception of “the Brutal,” had been out for the past five years due to
health reasons. Dr. Kurtz stated that he considered this the “best ride
ever.” He also wanted everyone to know that he made it all the way up to
the Northwest Trading Post on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Glendale Springs.
The quickest time for this Century Ride was 4 hours and
40 minutes by Ryan Jenkins from Salisbury.
Among the competitors was Chris Harvey of Mount
Pleasant, who holds the world record for the longest distance ridden on a
bicycle in 12 hours.
The ride began at 8:00 a.m. at the Ashe County Civic
Center when Maude Calhoun fired the starting pistol. Mrs. Calhoun founded
the event 15 years ago as a fundraiser for the Civic Center. Rest stops
were provided by United Chemi-Con, SSS Inc., Gates, and General Assembly.
Andy Sexton and members of the Amateur Radio Club drove the SAG Wagons,
patrolling the route and providing first aid or minor repairs needed by the
riders. Other major volunteers were the Ashe County Arts Council, the Ashe
County Little Theater, the Ashe County High School Junior ROTC, the West
Jefferson Police Department, and the Ashe County Sheriff’s Department. The
100-mile ride ended Saturday afternoon back at the Civic Center.
Mary Hughes wants the Brutal to confer a “Most
Determined” award, and she wants to win it as the last rider in for the past
six years! She’s from Greensboro and says that there are usually 4-5 other
riders coming in at the same time she does. Mary, thanks for you support of
the ride AND for your determination!

Civic Center volunteers report that the
group of riders who support this event annually are one of the finest groups
of people to host. Not only are their “threads” colorful, they are a
considerate group as well. One volunteer stated, “This is a really upbeat
group--their attitudes are so positively oriented, there is never any
profanity, and there are very few complaints. Our post ride survey results
are overwhelmingly positive, and many surveys make great suggestions for
future rides.”
